Abstract
Geographical information systems (GIS) offer an important tool to support grape-growers’ decisions, allowing for visualization in an adequate geographical support of information on the behaviour of his vineyards. However, commercial GIS solutions are usually beyond the reach of the average grape-grower, both because of their cost and because of the training needed to master it. In this work we tested a project developed in available open-source GIS software (Quantum GIS) as an application to map grape maturation, and perform map algebra routines in support of harvest planning in mountain vineyards with high complexity and diversity as it is the usual case in the Douro Wine Region. Obtained results confirm the high potential value conferred by grape quality geodata treatment in organizing and planning the harvest, as it improves the flow of information between viticulture and oenology professionals: a maturation precocity index was created demonstrating a spatial structure in its variability. Ways of using that knowledge for harvest scheduling and adjusting sampling sites for maturation control were discussed.
