Abstract: In the region of the Denomination of Origin (DO) “Vale dos Vinhedos”, Brazil, a study evaluated the effect of the occupation of Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA) in conflict with vineyards in regard to potential erosive soil losses. Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were used to quantify and map soil erosion, considering factors such as soil type, slope, erosivity and land use. A high resolution cartographic database with was used and maps derived from data correlation were ground truthed by field observations. The average soil loss in vineyards during the dormancy period was 3.09 t / ha / year. The loss of soil in the conflict areas between vineyards and PPA showed that in 72% of the areas of the DO there is low soil loss and in 28% of the conflict areas, there is mean soil loss. This may be due to the fact that most conflict areas are in river valleys, in flat areas, leading to low soil loss. The greatest soil loss occurs in areas with steeper slopes. The results of this evaluation contribute to the monitoring of the risk of erosive laminar processes, such as practices of conservation and environmental planning in areas of winemaking. Spatial assessment of vegetation cover to estimate soil loss using GIS techniques and a high spatial resolution database may contribute to erosion risk monitoring and PPA conservation preventive measures in winegrowing areas.
