Abstract: In order to consider the potential interest of precision viticulture in the specific conditions of Uruguay, an experiment was performed in two plots of 1.8 hectares in a commercial vineyard planted with Tannat (Vitis vinifera L.) variety and trained to Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) trellis system. The experiment was carried out over three consecutive years. The spatial variability of the vigor was estimated with high resolution NDVI data derived from airborne images. The goal of the experiment was to highlight eventual relation between NDVI and vine response (yield, grape composition and health). NDVI was used to establish a classification of three vigor levels: High (HV), Medium (MV) and Low (LV), confirmed by the vegetative expression of the vineyard in plots of 21 plants per vigor level, with 3 replicates. Data were analyzed using multivariate techniques, such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA showed that vigor, yield, rot grape weight and berry composition explained 100% of the total variance. HV was positively correlated with yield, weight of unhealthy berries, berry weight, vegetative expression and acidity. Meanwhile, MV was positively correlated with sugars and LV with components of grape quality (total potential and total extractable anthocyanins, and phenolic richness). The differences in vigor highlighted by NDVI at the within field level, was related to the plant´s response and show the interest in implementing site-specific management practices.
