Abstract: Different types of trellis systems determine different canopy spatial distributions, allowing greater or lesser shoot density in order to maximize the efficiency of light interception and productivity. With the aim of knowing the influence of trellis systems and shoot density on light interception and vineyard productivity, a trial was carried out during 2013 and 2014 in a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard in Albacete (Spain). Using two trellis systems, one positioned (vertical shoot positioned, VSP) and another not positioned (Sprawl), three levels of shoot density were established in each one: 35 000, 55 000 and 70 000 shoots per hectare. Leaf area index (LAI), leaf area density (LAD) and radiation balance were determined at maturity. Yield components were determined at harvest. The increase of shoot density increased LAI, although not proportionally as it was compensated by vigour. When relating LAI with volume, the increase of LAD by means of increased shoot density was greater in VSP. Regarding LAD with the occupied area by the trellis systems, Sprawl allowed the leaf area to occupy more volume. All experimental treatments reached the correct sugar maturity. In both trellis systems, low shoot density had excess vigour and excessive leaf/fruit ratio. Medium and high shoot density results vineyards more balanced, with similar leaf/fruit ratio.
